Communication Studies at 91Ó°ÊÓ helps students become thoughtful, adaptable communicators who write clearly, speak with confidence, analyze media critically and connect with real audiences. Offered as a Bachelor of Arts major and minor, the program builds a strong foundation in rhetoric, public speaking, interpersonal communication, organizational communication and media studies. Students learn to think across disciplines and apply their skills in practical settings.

91Ó°ÊÓ’s Communication Studies curriculum combines liberal arts inquiry with focused study of how messages shape relationships, organizations and public life. Students explore communication theory and practice through coursework in public speaking, journalism, business communication, persuasive writing and broadcast and electronic media. And because it’s 91Ó°ÊÓ â€“ where we love to draw innovative connections between disciplines – there is also a rotating selection electives, such as:

Being a Communications major at 91Ó°ÊÓ has been one of my greatest decisions! The professors are very meticulous in the learning process, and the opportunities in the area are endless.

As a Communications student at 91Ó°ÊÓ, you’re sure to grapple with some heady ideas in the classroom, and delve deep into some fascinating theories. But theory is just the beginning. Our emphasis on ideas + opportunities – and our prime location in Atlanta – guarantee you’ll find plenty of ways to turn theory into practice.

Metro Atlanta consistently ranks among the top ten largest media markets in the US. It’s also home to major media outlets like TBS, the Cartoon Network, CNN, and media empire Cox Enterprises. Household-name print publications include The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (with a daily circulation of more than two hundred thousand) and popular indie broadsheets like Creative Loafing. There’s also a thriving ad agency presence. So when it comes to internships, or landing your first gig, you’ll have plenty of options.

  • 91Ó°ÊÓ Communications students have interned at Atlanta Magazine, Atlanta Workshop Players, CBS News, Comcast, Cumulus Radio, Farm Star Living, FOX Sports, Georgia Democrats Victory Campaign, Georgia Justice Project, Georgia Magazine, IFS Securities, IHG, Intercontinental Hotels Group (a multinational company that encompasses brands like Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Latin American Association, MailChimp, NPR, Staybridge Suites (with more than 4,600 hotels around the world), the Home Depot, Cartoon Network/Turner and local radio stations.
  • Here at OU, the interdisciplinary curriculum and the forge-your-own-path mindset empower students like you to develop their own independent study classes and research projects – like one recent graduate who took his interest in video games to the next level by using his communication chops to study the concept of video games and narrative flow.
