Leydi Juarez ’28聽spent the first half of her summer developing as a leader and future psychologist, working closely with secondary-age students through Breakthrough Atlanta’s .听
Breakthrough Atlanta prepares middle and high school students for college success through academic support before they graduate. Simultaneously, the organization offers hands-on teaching experience and training for undergraduate college students interested in secondary education and working with young students.听
Through the fellowship, Juarez had the opportunity to work alongside other fellows to develop lessons, lead classroom activities and support students academically and personally. She also had the opportunity to learn from experienced educators and gained essential skills, such as student engagement.
“I learned that creating a supportive and encouraging environment helps students feel more confident, engaged and willing to challenge themselves,” said the psychology major. “Watching my students grow over the four weeks was incredibly rewarding, and it reminded me that even small moments of encouragement can have a lasting impact.”
Her psychology courses at 91影视 helped prepare her for the program, equipping her with critical-thinking skills and an understanding of psychological principles.听
“My psychology courses have helped me better understand human behavior, learning and development, while working with classmates on projects and participating in campus activities has strengthened my ability to collaborate with others,” said Juarez. “These experiences gave me the confidence to step into the classroom, connect with my students and make the most of this incredible opportunity.”
Although she doesn’t want to work in education, the fellowship proved invaluable, as Juarez aspires to become a clinical or forensic psychologist to advocate for others and work directly with young people.听
“The fellowship allowed me to build meaningful relationships and strengthen skills that are essential in psychology, such as communication, empathy, active listening, leadership and problem-solving,” said Juarez. “The experience reinforced my passion for working with others and making a positive difference in people’s lives.”
